Really nice course- 3 x 9 holes- named after wines- well it does nestle amongst sprawling vineyards. I played Chardonnay and Zinfadel. Really dramatic scenery, with well sculpted holes. I played of the whites which was just over 6000 yards- trust me, this will be long enough!Even though the greens had been aerated recently they still ran pretty true and were pretty fast, fairways were in very good condtition, bunkers were very good, lots of nice white sand- I tested those quite a bit, tee boxes were spotless. My favourite hole was the first Par3 on Chardonnay- 219 yards from the back, played down into a well protected green- a fantastic hole- the vista was awesome.I can`t recommend this place enough- after playing Spanish Bay with their high prices this place was a welcome gift. I played at 1.30pm- was the only soul on the course, weather was stunning- cart was included- all for 25 bucks. I played two balls all the way round and had some fun.Go play it, you won`t regret it.

As a quasi-regular at Poppy Ridge this summer, Ive played the course in various differing conditions (windy, calm, warm, hot, etc..), though yesterday it was better than I remember. Both courses were neatly mowed, the bunkers were properly sanded and the greens rolled very true-roughly 8-10 on the Stimpmeter. That said-there were some brown, under-seeded spots (some circled ground under repair, others that must have just graduated out of that designation) right next to spots that were so damp that you had to lift, clean & place your ball. And, some of the bunkers (namely right fairway bunker in #3 Zinfandel), was so damp it was like hitting off clay. Overall, however, the course played well and our scores reflected the good condition.

Poppy Ridge is a great perk for NCGA members especially since Poppy Hills is renovating. Pace of play is fantastic and with a weekend rate of $79 it cant be beat. Course is always in good shape and greens are very true.

Hey, its winter and it was 68deg out there and zero wind. Because of the time of year and current weather conditions, the course was a little dry, but in decent condition. The grounds keepers were doing the best they could with what they have to work with. The fairways gave you at least a 15 to 20 yard advantage on your drives. The greens were very fast and intimidating at times when judging speed. However, its all about the challenge. This course, being the sister course to Poppy Hills, gave us a run for our money and a great time was had by all. Thank you Poppy Ridge.
I played Poppy Ridge on December 3rd, a day after we experienced record rainfall in the San Francisco Bay Area. I figured the course would be in better condition than my home course and I was right. The greens, although wet, were in great shape and were still firm with a true roll. The fairways were in great shape too. My playing partner and I experienced one plugged lie the entire day playing the Chardonnay/Zinfandel combination. Mud was minimal. The pace of play was great - we didnt hurry and it was a liesurly 4 hours. I should say this was a Monday and the course was pretty empty. In fact when I checked in, the lovely and helpful woman in the pro shop even told me I could probably start whenever I saw the tee box open. Nothing like having a Reese Jones design all to yourself. There are a few choices for golf in the Livermore area but honestly, as an NCGA member, Poppy Ridge is a real treat. The tee box choices allow for a great, fair challenge for any level of player - except for those unable to handle a couple of forced carries, and the price for NCGA members cant be beat. The fairways are generous and the hazards are well placed - nothing tricked up here. And when you finish your round you can have another enjoyable round (pick your poison) while you look out at the rolling hills covered in vineyards and empty space. Its just a real peaceful spot. I love it everytime I play it.
