In San Diego for some weekend golf, booked Aviara because it is a favorite of our group. The course was everything we had anticipated. From the welcome as we arrived, to the nice practice facility ( on grass) to the course, everything was in great shape. Definitely coming back next year.

The course was in immaculate condition. The fairways are cut short so that most lies were tight. The greens were very fast and undulating and challenging . My threesome had many 3 or more putt experiences. There are relatively few forced carries or water hazards. The staff at Aviara was friendly and accommodating. The round took almost 5 hours, but was an enjoyable day of golf.

Located 45 midway between Orange County and downtown San Diego, Aviara delivers on its promise of a Country Club experience. The course is very well maintained and the greens are among the best in Southern California. The fairways had just been over-seeded when I played, so they were a little long and scraggly, but the rough and greens were pristine. The yardage book says the course tips out at 7200, but it doesnt play quite that long with many dog legs and downhill tee shots. The course isnt tight by any means, but it places a premium on shot placement on the greens. If you get above the hole, the greens stimp out at 11-12 so its difficult to keep it close. The staff does a great job at managing the pace of play. I had a 9:00am tee time on a Sunday and the 3 of us were finished by 12:45. They space the tee times at 10 minute intervals so you rarely see the group in front of you or the group behind you. Also the course is layed out well where you dont have a 2-3 minute drive between every hole which can add 20-30 minutes to your round. The service here was top notch. They deliver on the the member for a day mentality from start to finish. One example is the day I was there they had a service pipe break and flood the tunnel connecting #1 and #2. They went out of their way to shuttle everybody around the problem and made sure it didnt impact play at all. Many courses would have simply closed the first hole completely and started everybody on the other side of the flood, but Aviara went above and beyond to make sure the guests got what they paid for. From a value standpoint, the weekend rack rate is $245 which is very steep. I recommend finding an online deal, where you can pay as low as $105. I played for $125 and this course is definitely worth $125. Overall this is one of the very best courses in SoCal. The views arent quite as good as Torrey Pines, or Pelican Hill, but the golf is second to none. Quite possibly one of my favorite layouts in the area.

Well, technically...a good drive in a cart. Aviara ia a special place. The manicured grounds are just the beginning of the experience. The golf at this place is hard to beat, anywhere. The course is forgiving if you get it within 25 feet of the pin, but what course isnt. Great putters are rewarded here. The greens are enormous and fast. Even when getting on in regulation, you might have a 60 foot putt with 15 feet of break. I like this aspect of the round. The greens need to be this big because if your tee shot finds the rough, you need all the help you can get. The rough can be thick and juicy with an awkward lie. Overall, keep it in the fairway and shoot perhaps your best score, otherwise head to bar quick or find the cart girl because it might be a long day.The staff, the clubhouse, and the food at the turn and the Argyle are all topnotch. In golf, you seldom get what you pay for. Either too much money for subpar conditions, or just the opposite; great conditions for a budget price. Aviara is one of the priciest rounds you can play in southern california, but its worth every cent in my opinion.
